Hold on to your masks, folks! The rumors have been flying, the fans have been buzzing, but it looks like the jump from AEW to WWE for Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix—better known as the high-flying, face-kicking, former AEW Tag Team Champions The Lucha Brothers—might not be happening just yet. According to the ever-reliable Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, things aren’t quite as clear-cut as they seemed.

You’ve probably heard the reports—Penta and Fenix, AEW originals, had supposedly inked multi-year deals with WWE, with AEW President Tony Khan even waving off injury extensions to Fenix’s contract in a moment of grace. Cue the farewell tour, right? Not so fast! Meltzer is now pouring some cold water on those sizzling rumors. It turns out, both Lucha Brothers are still technically under contract with AEW, which means any talks with WWE are off the table until those contracts expire. Can’t jump ship if the ship’s still docked, folks.

Here’s where it gets interesting: Penta’s deal is reportedly up within the next two months, and he’s expected to leave—probably because of his frustration with AEW’s internal politics, especially the tensions around their partnership with CMLL. But Rey Fenix? His situation is more complicated. It seems Tony Khan has had a change of heart about that injury time extension after all. So, unless things suddenly change faster than a Rey Fenix tope suicida, Fenix will likely be staying put in AEW for another year. So, half of the Lucha Brothers may stay grounded in AEW for the foreseeable future, while Penta could be packing his bags for a WWE ring.

Meltzer also reports that both Khan and WWE put in competitive offers for the brothers, but it seems Penta was the first to make up his mind. Penta’s frustrations with how he was used, along with some backstage politics, led him to lean toward WWE. However, after the summer’s detente—where Penta and Fenix got to shine in Arena Mexico alongside PAC—it seems things smoothed over… for a bit.

But we know one thing: if Penta does make the leap to WWE, it’s going to be big. Lucha-style entrances, masks flying, and more “Cero Miedo” than you can shake a kendo stick at. And if Fenix sticks around? Well, AEW fans can still count on some jaw-dropping moments for at least another year.

As always, stay tuned, because in wrestling, nothing’s official until the bell rings—or until Dave Meltzer says so.
